Probiotics and Antibiotics

We all know that if we get really sick, our doctor may prescribe us an antibiotic to help our body fight off the virus or bad bacteria. But what really are antibiotics?

Antibiotics come from different types of mold and are used to kill bacteria. But just as the term probiotic translates to “For Life”, antibiotic means “Against Life” (Anti = Against and Biotic = Life). When you take an antibiotic, it is literally a bomb that goes off in your body – meaning that not only do they kill the bad guys… they also kill the good guys4.  Naturally, you’ll begin to feel better fairly quickly. Then most people either forget to take pills, stop taking them because they think they are better or because of diarrhea (one in five people stop because of this17!). This is the worst thing you can do with antibiotics! When you take an antibiotic, the weakest bacteria are killed first18. But if the pills are not taken long enough, the stronger bacteria are not killed which could cause all kinds of mayhem! Either way, if you take them or stop taking them, you will need to send in some back-up.

How?

With probiotics of course! Probiotics are “good” bacteria similar to those normally found in the gut that are helpful in promoting a healthy flora in the digestive tract, especially during and after taking antibiotics. For some people (like the kiddies and the hubs!), it’s not that easy to take probiotic pills or even the yogurts on a consistent basis in order to put more of these tiny little warriors to work! Give your family Healthy Delights ProBiotic Bites to help restore the beneficial bacteria back into the gut while taking an antibiotic.* Our 1 g of NATURAL sugar per delicious bite will help the probiotics go down a lot easier!
